India likely to face Cape Verde on October 6 after Brazil friendly

Kolkata and Kochi emerge as possible venues as AIFF awaits confirmation for another high-profile international fixture during October window

The Indian men's football team could face 2026 FIFA World Cup surprise package Cape Verde in an international friendly on October 6, just three days after its marquee clash against five-time world champions Brazil. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is awaiting final confirmation from its Cape Verde counterpart, with Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium and Kochi's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium being considered as possible venues. India are already scheduled to host Brazil at the Salt Lake Stadium on October 3.

Cape Verde fixture awaits confirmation

Talks between the two federations have been underway for several days, with the AIFF looking to make full use of the international window. Earlier discussions had considered staging the Cape Verde match at any point between September 30 and October 6, but October 6 has now emerged as the likely date.

An AIFF official said Kolkata and Kochi were under consideration for the fixture. The federation was expecting confirmation from Cape Verde before proceeding with the final arrangements.

Cape Verde would provide India with another formidable test following their encounter with Brazil. The African side attracted considerable attention during the 2026 World Cup, where they impressed on their tournament debut and advanced beyond the group stage.

Preparatory camp likely from September 21

India head coach Khalid Jamil could assemble his players for a preparatory camp from September 21 as the national team gears up for a demanding international window. With the domestic league season beginning only after the FIFA window, the camp would be particularly important in helping players regain match fitness and tactical cohesion.

India recently withdrew from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup in Indonesia because of the scheduling clash with the Brazil friendly. AIFF officials had subsequently indicated that the federation would try to arrange matches against higher-ranked opposition to ensure the national team did not lose valuable competitive opportunities.

Rare run against World Cup teams

If the Cape Verde fixture is confirmed, India could face an unprecedented sequence of opponents that participated in the 2026 World Cup. After the proposed October matches against Brazil and Cape Verde, the Blue Tigers are also expected to travel to New Zealand for two matches in November.

That would potentially give India four matches against teams that competed at the latest World Cup in the space of two international windows, offering Jamil's side valuable exposure against significantly stronger opposition.

For Indian football, the proposed Cape Verde encounter would also extend a rare period of high-profile international fixtures. While the Brazil match remains the centrepiece of the October window, facing Cape Verde shortly afterwards could provide a more realistic competitive benchmark for a national side seeking to improve against higher-ranked opponents.
