Bengaluru FC have strengthened their defensive ranks ahead of the 2026-27 Indian Super League season with the signing of experienced Dutch centre-back Menno Koch. The 32-year-old arrives in India after a career spanning several European leagues, most recently turning out for Sarpsborg 08 FF in Norway’s top-flight Eliteserien. His addition gives Bengaluru an experienced central defender as head coach Pep Muñoz continues reshaping the squad for the new campaign.
Koch becomes Bengaluru FC’s fifth new recruit ahead of the season, joining Spanish midfielder Borja Martinez, Portuguese centre-back Sandro Embalo, Argentine midfielder Manuel de Iriondo and Montenegrin forward Mihailo Perovic.
European pedigree
Born in the Netherlands, Koch developed at PSV Eindhoven’s highly regarded academy and progressed through the club’s youth teams before making his senior debut in 2014. His career subsequently took him to NAC Breda and FC Utrecht in the Netherlands before spells with KAS Eupen in Belgium and CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria. He later moved to Norway with Sarpsborg.
Koch accumulated considerable Eredivisie experience during his time in the Netherlands. He made 46 league appearances across two seasons during his permanent spell with NAC Breda and also captained the club before moving to Eupen in 2019.
The centre-back is expected to offer Bengaluru physical presence as well as composure in possession, with his ability to distribute from defence fitting into the playing identity Muñoz is attempting to establish.
Muñoz backs new recruit
Muñoz highlighted Koch’s experience in European top divisions and believes the defender possesses the attributes required for Bengaluru’s approach.
The coach pointed particularly to Koch’s physical strength and passing range, saying those qualities should complement the style the Blues are looking to develop.
Koch, meanwhile, said discussions with the coaching staff and club management convinced him that Bengaluru represented the right next step in his career. The Dutchman said he was attracted by the club’s plans and was looking forward to taking on a new challenge in Indian football.
The signing represents another significant piece in Bengaluru’s pre-season rebuild. With Koch and Embalo both added at centre-back, the Blues have moved to reinforce the heart of their defence while simultaneously bringing in overseas options across midfield and attack.
Bengaluru FC, founded in 2013, have won the ISL title once, alongside two I-League crowns, and remain the only Indian club to have reached an AFC Cup final. The club will hope its revamped foreign contingent can help mount another challenge for silverware in the 2026-27 campaign.
