Bayern Munich start season with DFL Supercup win, beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1

Michael Olise scores and assists as Bayern hold off Dortmund fightback to claim first trophy ahead of new Bundesliga campaign

Bayern Munich began their competitive season with silverware after beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the German Supercup at Signal Iduna Park, with Michael Olise producing the decisive performance for the defending Bundesliga champions. Nathaniel Brown marked his competitive Bayern debut with the opening goal in the 28th minute before Olise doubled the visitors’ advantage in first-half stoppage time. Fabio Silva pulled one back for Dortmund with 15 minutes remaining, but Bayern survived the hosts’ late push to secure the trophy. Dortmund’s hopes of forcing an equaliser suffered another blow when Ramy Bensebaini was sent off in the final minute of regulation time.

Brown makes instant impact

Bayern were the stronger side for much of the opening period and prevented Dortmund from establishing any sustained attacking rhythm. Their pressure paid off shortly before the half-hour mark. Olise created the opportunity for Brown, who finished emphatically to give Bayern the lead on his competitive debut for the club.

The goal provided an immediate reward for Bayern’s control and left Dortmund searching for a response against a visiting side pressing aggressively and moving the ball with greater purpose. Bayern struck again just before the interval. This time Olise went from creator to scorer, producing an individual effort to double the advantage and send Vincent Kompany’s side into half-time firmly in command.

Dortmund improve after break

The hosts were far more threatening after the restart. Changes introduced by Dortmund added urgency to their attacking play and forced Bayern to defend for longer periods.

Fabio Silva eventually reduced the deficit in the 75th minute, his effort taking a deflection off Alphonso Davies before finding the net.

The goal transformed the closing stages, with Dortmund suddenly sensing an opportunity to take the contest beyond 90 minutes.

Bayern responded by looking for a third goal rather than simply retreating. Harry Kane went close from distance, while Olise was denied another goal by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

Late chance goes begging

Dortmund continued to push and were handed a major opportunity deep into stoppage time when Maximilian Beier found himself with a clear sight of goal.

Beier, however, sent his effort over the crossbar, allowing Bayern to escape what could have been a dramatic late equaliser.

By then Dortmund had been reduced to 10 men following Bensebaini’s dismissal in the 90th minute, further complicating their attempt to complete the comeback.

Bayern managed the remaining moments and sealed a 2-1 victory to add another trophy to their collection.

Olise sets early marker

Olise was at the centre of Bayern’s best attacking moments, contributing directly to both goals despite having only recently returned to training.

His combination of creativity and finishing provided an encouraging early sign for Kompany as Bayern prepare to defend their Bundesliga crown.

Brown’s performance was another positive. Asked to operate in an unfamiliar advanced role, the new signing responded with a goal and an energetic display that strengthened his case for a significant role during the campaign.

The victory also offered Bayern a timely confidence boost before their Bundesliga opener against VfB Stuttgart on August 28.

For Dortmund, the second-half improvement offered encouragement despite the defeat. They pushed Bayern hard after the interval and came within one missed late opportunity of forcing the Supercup into a different conclusion.

Bayern, however, had already done enough. Two first-half goals and an influential display from Olise ensured the German champions opened their new campaign in familiar fashion — with another trophy.
