Formula 1 and the FIA on Wednesday announced the calendar for the 2027 FIA Formula One World Championship, featuring 24 Grands Prix across 22 countries and a record 10 Sprint events. The season will begin with the Bahrain Grand Prix in March before moving to Saudi Arabia, while Abu Dhabi will once again stage the championship finale in December. The campaign will stretch across five continents as Formula 1 continues with a 24-race schedule.
Bahrain opens season
Pre-season testing will be held at the Bahrain International Circuit from February 24 to 27, with teams getting four days of running before the championship begins at the same venue.
After the opening double-header in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, Formula 1 will travel to Australia, Japan and China. The championship will then head to North America for races in Miami and Canada before beginning its European leg. Monaco will open the European portion of the championship, followed by the returning Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimão. Silverstone and Austria will form another double-header before races in Belgium and Hungary lead into the summer break. Racing will resume at Monza in September, followed by the Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid's Madring circuit.
Portugal, Türkiye return
Two notable additions to the 2027 calendar are Portugal and Türkiye. Portimão returns after last hosting Formula 1 in 2021 and will stage the Portuguese Grand Prix as part of a two-year agreement covering 2027 and 2028.
Türkiye also returns to the championship, with Istanbul Park joining Azerbaijan and Singapore in an October triple-header. The Turkish circuit previously staged its most recent Formula 1 races in 2020 and 2021. The closing phase will take drivers to Austin, Mexico City and Sao Paulo before the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Qatar and Abu Dhabi will then bring the season to a close in December.
Record Sprint programme
Formula 1 will significantly expand its Sprint programme in 2027, increasing the number of Sprint weekends from six to 10. Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco and Abu Dhabi will host Sprint events for the first time. Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Brazil and Qatar complete the 10-event Sprint roster.
The expanded programme means three of the opening four race weekends — Bahrain, Australia and Japan — will feature Sprints, placing additional emphasis on teams being competitive from the beginning of the season. The campaign will also conclude with consecutive Sprint weekends in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Format gains ground
Formula 1 introduced Sprint racing in 2021, initially staging three events per season before expanding the programme to six annually from 2023 to 2026. F1 said viewership for Sprint weekends has been 12 per cent higher than for non-Sprint weekends, while 82 per cent of attendees surveyed at Sprint events said the format added value to their tickets.
The Sprint is contested over approximately 100 km and awards points to the top eight finishers, with eight points going to the winner and one to the driver finishing eighth. Formula 1 said the geographical arrangement of the 2027 calendar has also been designed to create a more efficient flow of races during the season while maintaining the championship's presence across major global markets.
