Virat Kohli added another landmark to his remarkable ODI career on Monday, becoming the fastest batter to reach 15,000 runs in the format. The India star achieved the feat during the first ODI against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram.
Kohli entered the match needing 59 runs to overtake Sachin Tendulkar, who had previously been the only batter to cross the 15,000-run mark in ODI cricket. While Tendulkar reached the milestone in 377 innings, Kohli got there in just 303.
Kohli and Gill power India to victory
The record came during another commanding chase by Kohli, who finished unbeaten on 139 off 112 balls, with 10 fours and nine sixes. Skipper Shubman Gill also struck a century, making 110 off 107 balls.
The pair added 150 runs for the second wicket as India chased down West Indies' 296 with eight wickets in hand, reaching 300 for two in 41.4 overs.
Gill's century was his 10th in ODIs, while Kohli brought up his 55th ODI hundred and 86th international century.
India now lead the three-match series 1-0.
Kohli dominates during another ODI chase
Gill and Rohit Sharma gave India a strong start with a 75-run opening stand before Kohli joined the captain at the crease.
Gill survived an early scare when substitute Keemo Paul dropped him off Jayden Seales when he was on 11. He went on to make the most of the opportunity, reaching his half-century from 49 balls before accelerating further.
Kohli, meanwhile, continued his familiar approach in ODI chases, combining quick running between the wickets with powerful strokeplay. This time, his innings also featured an increased number of sixes.
He brought up his half-century from 40 balls and continued attacking the West Indies bowlers before reaching three figures in 74 deliveries. His century came with a six off Gudakesh Motie over mid-wicket, triggering loud celebrations at the Greenfield Stadium.
Greaves' century overshadowed
Earlier, Justin Greaves scored his maiden ODI century, making 101 for West Indies. However, his effort could not prevent India from completing the chase.
Kuldeep Yadav was among India's standout performers with four wickets as West Indies were restricted to 296 before Kohli and Gill took control of the chase.
