Kohli's 74, Arshdeep's four-wicket haul power India to a five-wicket win over New Zealand

India take a 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series after chasing a rain-revised target of 143 in 22.4 overs at Auckland

Virat Kohli's commanding 74 and a disciplined performance by India's pace attack powered the visitors to a five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the rain-affected first One-Day International at Eden Park on Wednesday, giving India a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Chasing an original target of 186, India overcame two rain interruptions and an early setback to reach a revised target of 143 in 22.4 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.

Kohli struck 74 off 51 deliveries, including 13 fours and a six, while captain Shubman Gill contributed 37 as the pair put together a decisive second-wicket partnership.

Earlier, Arshdeep Singh spearheaded India's bowling effort with figures of 4/70, while Gurnoor Brar claimed 3/44 and Anshul Kamboj returned an impressive 2/22 from his 10 overs to dismiss New Zealand for 185 in 40.2 overs.

Kamboj was named Player of the Match for his economical bowling performance.

India's pursuit began poorly when Rohit Sharma departed for a six-ball duck in the opening over, caught by New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner off Kyle Jamieson's bowling.

However, Kohli immediately took control, finding boundaries against the New Zealand seamers and preventing the early dismissal from affecting India's momentum.

Gill provided steady support at the other end as the pair rebuilt the innings.

Kohli survived an LBW appeal against Jamieson in the fifth over, with the ball striking him too high, before continuing his aggressive approach.

India had reached 54/1 in 10.5 overs when rain interrupted play for the first time, with Kohli unbeaten on 29 and Gill on 17.

After the resumption, Gill struck two boundaries off Blair Tickner, but another spell of rain forced the players off the field.

The target was eventually revised to 143 in 32 overs, leaving India comfortably placed to complete the chase.

Kohli resumed with attacking intent, striking successive boundaries against Jamieson and reaching his 80th ODI half-century in just 35 deliveries.

The former India captain continued to dominate the bowling, particularly against short-pitched deliveries, as India moved closer to victory.

Kohli and Gill added 113 runs for the second wicket, effectively taking the contest away from New Zealand.

The partnership ended when Nathan Smith dismissed Gill for 37 in the 19th over.

Kohli followed shortly afterwards, caught by Tim Seifert off Jacob Duffy for 74.

Duffy then removed Axar Patel for a duck in the same over, giving the hosts a brief opportunity to apply pressure.

Shreyas Iyer contributed 15 before becoming India's fifth wicket, but the visitors remained comfortably ahead of the required scoring rate.

KL Rahul and Naman Dhir completed the chase without further setbacks, with Dhir striking the winning boundary.

India finished on 143/5 in 22.4 overs, securing victory with five wickets remaining.

Earlier, India captain Gill won the toss and elected to bowl, a decision that proved effective as the visitors' relatively inexperienced pace attack exploited the conditions.

Arshdeep provided the early breakthroughs, removing Will Young and Rachin Ravindra to leave New Zealand struggling during the powerplay.

The hosts reached 45/2 after 10 overs, with Tim Seifert attempting to rebuild the innings.

Seifert scored 38 before Gurnoor Brar dismissed him, while Tom Latham also fell to the tall pacer, who took a sharp return catch.

New Zealand's middle order struggled to establish substantial partnerships as India's bowlers maintained pressure through disciplined lines and lengths.

Kamboj was particularly effective, conceding just 22 runs in his 10-over spell and delivering 46 dot balls.

His accuracy restricted scoring opportunities and prevented New Zealand from recovering after losing early wickets.

Glenn Phillips contributed 30, while Daryl Mitchell also attempted to steady the innings before being run out following alert fielding by Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul.

Kohli produced a spectacular diving catch at second slip to dismiss Nathan Smith off Kamboj's bowling, adding to India's strong fielding performance.

With wickets falling regularly, New Zealand appeared unlikely to post a competitive total.

However, Blair Tickner counter-attacked towards the end, smashing 34 off 23 deliveries, including four sixes.

Tickner and Jacob Duffy added 39 runs for the final wicket, pushing New Zealand to 185 before Gurnoor completed the innings in the 41st over.

Arshdeep finished with four wickets, while Gurnoor and Kamboj shared five wickets between them.

The Indian attack claimed nine wickets through pace bowling, with the remaining dismissal coming through a run-out.

Kohli's match-winning innings also saw him surpass Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most runs scored while chasing in ODI cricket.

The former India captain took his tally in ODI run chases to 8,741, moving ahead of Tendulkar's 8,720.

The achievement came on the eve of Kohli's 38th birthday, adding another milestone to his international career.

His innings also underlined his continued importance to India's ODI batting line-up, particularly in run chases.

The victory gives India early momentum in the five-match series, with the second ODI scheduled to take place in Wellington on Saturday.

Brief scores: New Zealand 185 all out in 40.2 overs (Tim Seifert 38, Blair Tickner 34; Arshdeep Singh 4/70, Gurnoor Brar 3/44, Anshul Kamboj 2/22) lost to India 143/5 in 22.4 overs (Virat Kohli 74, Shubman Gill 37; Jacob Duffy 3/49) by five wickets via DLS method.
