Injury management of key players, preparations for the upcoming all-format tour of New Zealand and the roadmap for next year’s ODI World Cup are set to dominate a crucial BCCI review meeting in Mumbai on Thursday, with head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar among the key participants.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and Centre of Excellence (COE) head VVS Laxman are also expected to attend. While India’s disappointing June-July tour of the UK is likely to be reviewed in detail, the board is understood to be keen on looking ahead to the New Zealand tour in October-November and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Injury timelines under scanner
A major area of discussion is expected to be the rehabilitation and availability of centrally contracted and targeted players currently undergoing treatment at the Bengaluru-based COE. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya are among the prominent names whose fitness timelines are crucial to the team management’s plans.
A BCCI source said Agarkar had sought greater clarity from the COE over Bumrah’s availability before the Sri Lanka Tests after the selection committee was informally told that the pacer could be available for at least one, if not two, Tests. Bumrah’s absence was particularly felt in the second Test, where Mohammed Siraj struggled on a placid surface.
Pandya, meanwhile, has not played since the IPL and remains central to India’s ODI World Cup plans. He has shifted his base to Bengaluru and intends to train there, but the team management and selectors are understood to be firm that he will not be considered for 50-over cricket until the COE clears him to bowl his full quota of 10 overs.
Pacer Akash Deep has also spent several months at the COE without playing international cricket, with questions remaining over whether he will be available for the New Zealand A series preceding the Test assignment.
The fitness of Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana will also be discussed. All four were named in India’s squad for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan beginning September 13, subject to fitness clearance, and are currently undergoing Return to Play protocols.
Rohit’s future on agenda
The meeting is also expected to discuss the ODI futures of veterans Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja ahead of the 2027 World Cup, with Rohit’s position likely to attract particular attention.
There has been speculation that Rohit was informed during the England tour that the selectors were considering moving on and was asked whether he intended to retire after the Lord’s ODI. However, his century at Lord’s, despite coming in a losing cause, appears to have pushed back any immediate retirement plans.
Questions nevertheless remain over whether the former captain will remain part of India's plans through to the World Cup in South Africa next year. Kohli and Jadeja are understood to be under considerably less pressure at this stage.
Agarkar continuity likely
Agarkar’s own future could also become clearer following the meeting. His current contract expires on October 4, but his involvement in the review has fuelled expectations that the BCCI may prefer continuity in the selection set-up until the completion of the ODI World Cup.
The board is also expected to seek greater coordination between Gambhir, Agarkar and Laxman, particularly over player workloads, rehabilitation timelines and selection availability. With a demanding New Zealand tour approaching and World Cup planning entering a crucial phase, clarity over the fitness of India’s core players is likely to be among the board’s immediate priorities.
