Travis Head produced a commanding century after Cooper Connolly starred with the ball as Australia cruised past Zimbabwe in the second ODI on Friday, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
After Connolly’s four-wicket haul helped Australia restrict Zimbabwe to 220, Head took control of the chase with an aggressive hundred as the hosts comfortably overhauled the target. The victory followed Australia’s win in the opening ODI and ensured the hosts wrapped up the series with one match still to play.
Connolly strikes four
Zimbabwe were put under pressure after Australia opted to bowl, with the home attack regularly breaking partnerships and preventing the visitors from building sustained momentum.
Connolly emerged as the standout bowler, picking up four wickets as Zimbabwe’s middle and lower order struggled to accelerate. His spell ensured the visitors could not capitalise on promising starts and were eventually bowled out for 220.
Zimbabwe had periods of resistance during the innings but failed to produce the substantial partnership required to push the total towards a more challenging mark. Australia maintained control through the middle overs before closing out the innings efficiently.
Connolly’s four-wicket effort represented another important contribution from the young all-rounder as Australia continued to test its depth and younger options in the series.
Head takes charge
Any hopes Zimbabwe had of defending the modest total quickly faded once Head settled into his innings.
The Australian opener attacked from the outset, finding the boundary regularly and preventing Zimbabwe’s bowlers from building pressure. His aggressive approach ensured the required run rate was never a concern and allowed Australia to remain firmly in control throughout the chase.
Head raced to his century with a combination of powerful drives, cuts and characteristic attacking strokes, turning what could have been a potentially tricky pursuit into a comfortable Australian victory.
Zimbabwe struggled to find a way through once Head gained momentum. Changes in bowling and field placements did little to disrupt the left-hander, who continued to score freely and ensured Australia moved rapidly towards the target.
Series in Australia’s pocket
The comprehensive win gave Australia a 2-0 advantage and secured the three-match series before the final ODI.
For Zimbabwe, the defeat highlighted the difficulty of converting starts into substantial scores against an Australian attack that maintained pressure throughout the innings. Their bowlers were then confronted by an in-form Head, leaving little opportunity to force their way back into the contest.
Australia, meanwhile, will take encouragement from the contributions at both ends of the experience spectrum. Head once again demonstrated his ability to dictate limited-overs contests at the top of the order, while Connolly provided another indication of his growing value with the ball.
With the series already secured, Australia will head into the third and final ODI looking to complete a clean sweep, while Zimbabwe will be seeking a consolation victory after being outplayed in the opening two matches.
