Dhananjaya de Silva steps down as Sri Lanka Test captain, Kusal Mendis takes charge

The 35-year-old all-rounder had relinquished the captaincy with immediate effect, saying the responsibility should pass to the next generation

Mendis has represented Sri Lanka in 75 Tests, scoring 4,836 runs at an average of 36.36, including 10 centuries and 23 half-centuries. Although he has previously captained the national side in 22 ODIs and three T20Is, he is yet to lead Sri Lanka in a Test match.

His appointment provides continuity across formats as Sri Lanka seek to improve their performances and establish a more consistent leadership structure.

Pakistan series first assignment

Mendis will begin his tenure as Test captain during Sri Lanka's upcoming two-match World Test Championship series against Pakistan. The opening Test is scheduled to be played in Rawalpindi from November 9 to 13, followed by the second match in Lahore from November 17 to 21.

The series will provide an early examination of Mendis' leadership as Sri Lanka attempt to recover from their recent setbacks in Test cricket. With several experienced players still available, including de Silva, the new captain will have an opportunity to combine established performers with emerging talent.

De Silva, meanwhile, remains an important member of the batting unit. Having played 69 Tests and scored more than 4,400 runs, including 13 centuries, he continues to offer experience in the middle order as well as a useful off-spin bowling option.

His decision to relinquish the captaincy marks another transition in Sri Lankan cricket as the team prepares for a demanding international schedule. With Mendis now entrusted with leadership across formats, the immediate focus will shift to the Pakistan series and Sri Lanka's efforts to improve its standing in Test cricket.
