The Indian senior men’s football team arrived in Kolkata on Monday as the build-up began for its much-awaited international friendly against five-time world champions Brazil on October 3.
The Blue Tigers landed in the city at around 12.45 pm, days after their hard-fought draw against Panama in Bengaluru. With the Panama assignment behind them, Khalid Jamil’s side will now turn its attention to the considerably bigger challenge awaiting it at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, popularly known as the Salt Lake Stadium.
Brazil test awaits
The clash against Brazil forms part of a demanding international window for India, which has been handed an opportunity to test itself against some of world football’s strongest sides. After Brazil, India will face two-time world champions Uruguay at the same venue on October 6.
Anticipation has already been building in Kolkata ahead of the Brazil encounter, with the city preparing to host one of the most high-profile international matches involving the Indian team on home soil. India’s arrival has formally begun the countdown to the October 3 fixture.
The Blue Tigers will enter the match carrying confidence from their performance against Panama. India showed resilience and discipline in Bengaluru, with Ryan Williams producing a memorable first-half finish as the hosts held their higher-ranked opponents.
Williams in spotlight
Williams’ performance against Panama has added to the interest surrounding India’s attack ahead of the Brazil game. The forward’s goal was one of the standout moments of the contest and will give the Indian camp encouragement before it faces an opponent of significantly greater pedigree.
India’s players have spoken in the build-up about the significance of facing teams such as Brazil and Uruguay at home. The Blue Tigers will then have little time to recover, with Uruguay awaiting them three days later at the same venue. The two Kolkata fixtures will complete India’s demanding run of friendlies against teams that featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
