Abhishek strikes with 45 seconds left as India edge Pakistan to reach hockey final

The defending champions had surrendered a three-goal advantage before Abhishek’s last-minute strike secured a dramatic 4-3 semifinal victory

Defending champions India survived a spectacular Pakistan comeback before Abhishek struck with just 45 seconds remaining to seal a dramatic 4-3 victory and a place in the Asian Games men’s hockey final on Thursday. India, who led 3-0 midway through the second quarter, conceded three unanswered goals before Abhishek’s last-gasp intervention spared them a shootout and kept their title defence alive.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh converted penalty corners in the fifth and 13th minutes before Sukhjeet Singh extended the advantage with a field goal in the 23rd. Pakistan, however, transformed the semifinal after Abu Mahmood pulled one back just before half-time, with Hannan Shahid and Waheed Rana scoring after the interval to make it 3-3. India will face Malaysia, who defeated South Korea in the other semifinal, in Saturday’s gold-medal match.

Harmanpreet puts India ahead

India began at a furious pace, forcing Pakistan deep into their own territory and repeatedly testing their defence. A succession of penalty corners followed, although the defending champions initially struggled to convert their territorial dominance into goals.

Harmanpreet eventually broke through from India's fifth penalty corner in the fifth minute. The skipper unleashed a powerful drag-flick that travelled through goalkeeper Ali Raza's legs, rewarding India for their aggressive opening.

The pressure barely eased after the breakthrough. India continued attacking down both flanks, moving the ball quickly and preventing Pakistan from establishing any sustained possession in the opening quarter.

Harmanpreet struck again in the 13th minute after Manpreet Singh's purposeful run down the left earned India's seventh penalty corner. The captain drilled another drag-flick past the Pakistan defence to make it 2-0 and put India firmly in control.

Sukhjeet stretches advantage

India carried their momentum into the second quarter and continued to dominate possession. Pakistan struggled to disrupt India's combinations through midfield, while the defending champions repeatedly found space around the circle.

The third goal arrived in the 23rd minute. Shilanand Lakra produced an accurate pass from the left of the goalline and Sukhjeet positioned himself perfectly in front of goal, tapping the ball home to give India a commanding 3-0 advantage.

At that stage, India appeared on course for a comfortable passage into the final. Their midfield controlled the tempo, Pakistan had created few clear opportunities and the Indian defence had rarely been seriously threatened.

The complexion of the semifinal, however, changed just before the interval. Pakistan earned a penalty corner with 35 seconds remaining in the second quarter and Abu Mahmood converted it to reduce India's advantage to 3-1.

The goal gave Pakistan a foothold in a contest that had until then been overwhelmingly controlled by India.

Pakistan mount stunning comeback

India initially appeared determined to restore their three-goal cushion after the restart. Dilpreet Singh and Hardik Singh injected pace into the attack, while Abhishek came agonisingly close in the 40th minute when his attempt struck the far post.

Pakistan, however, began finding increasingly large spaces in India's midfield. Even a yellow card to Ammad Butt in the 37th minute failed to halt their momentum, and India's control of possession gradually disappeared.

India's own disciplinary problems compounded the pressure when Dilpreet received a green card in the 43rd minute. Pakistan capitalised almost immediately.

Hannan Shahid struck in the 45th minute after being set up by Ali Ghazanfar, cutting India's advantage to 3-2 and setting up a tense final quarter.

The goal transformed the match. Pakistan began playing with greater confidence and pushed more players forward, while India increasingly retreated towards their own circle rather than attempting to regain control higher up the pitch.

Rana completes Pakistan fightback

Pakistan's pressure was rewarded in the 49th minute. Hannan turned provider this time, finding Waheed Rana, who finished clinically to make it 3-3 and wipe out the three-goal advantage India had built in the opening 23 minutes.

The equaliser left the defending champions scrambling. Pakistan's quick passing stretched the Indian defence, while India's attacking threat diminished as they concentrated on preventing another goal.

Pakistan continued to push for the winner and India required crucial defensive interventions to remain level. At the opposite end, goalkeeper Ali Raza twice denied India following a free hit from outside the circle.

India also sought a penalty corner through a video referral during the tense closing stages, but their appeal was unsuccessful. With neither team able to find the breakthrough, the semifinal appeared destined for a shootout.

Abhishek delivers at the death

With only 45 seconds remaining, India finally found the decisive opening. Abhishek got his stick to the ball close to the goalmouth, with his effort taking a deflection off Pakistan defender Sufiyan before wrong-footing Ali Raza and crossing the line.

The goal triggered celebrations in the Indian camp and left Pakistan with virtually no time to respond. After surrendering a 3-0 advantage and spending much of the second half under pressure, India had escaped with a 4-3 victory.

Abhishek's intervention also prevented a second successive knockout match from becoming a prolonged test for the defending champions, who had beaten China 3-0 in the quarterfinal before facing a far more difficult challenge against Pakistan.

Malaysia await in gold-medal clash

India will now meet Malaysia in Saturday's final after the Southeast Asian side defeated South Korea in the other semifinal. The defending champions remain one victory away from retaining the Asian Games title, but their performance against Pakistan exposed areas they will need to address before the gold-medal contest.

India were dominant when they controlled possession and attacked aggressively in the first half, but their retreat after the interval allowed Pakistan to dictate the tempo. Losing control of midfield and defending increasingly deep turned what had appeared a comfortable semifinal into a contest decided in its final minute.

For Pakistan, the defeat ended a remarkable recovery after they had been three goals down. For India, Abhishek's late strike ensured the lasting image of the semifinal was not the collapse of their commanding advantage but a dramatic escape into the Asian Games final.
