'Verify facts before...': Virat Kohli refutes Rs 5 crore claim over Premanand Maharaj ashram visit

Kohli’s spokesperson called the Rs 5 crore payment allegation 'completely false, baseless and factually incorrect' and defended his visits

Virat Kohli has denied allegations that he was paid Rs 5 crore to visit spiritual leader Premanand Maharaj’s ashram in Vrindavan.

The claim was made by Falahari Maharaj Dinesh Sharma, president of the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Sangharsh Nyas, amid scrutiny surrounding the Radha Keli Kunj Ashram following the death of a disciple.

Kohli’s spokesperson has strongly rejected the allegation, calling it false and without any factual basis.

“We would like to categorically state that the claims made by Falahari Maharaj Dinesh Sharma in regards to Mr. Virat Kohli are completely false, baseless and factually incorrect.”

The statement also said Kohli’s visits to Premanand Maharaj are driven by his personal faith and respect for the spiritual leader.

“Mr. Virat Kohli visits Premanand Maharaj Ji purely out of his deep faith and reverence for Maharaj Ji. We strongly refute these claims and urge the media to exercise due diligence, verify facts before reporting or amplifying such statements, and report responsibly,” it further said.

There is no evidence establishing that Kohli or his wife, actor Anushka Sharma, received the alleged payment for visiting the ashram.

Kohli and Anushka's visits to Vrindavan

Kohli and Anushka have visited the Radha Keli Kunj Ashram several times over the years. Their first notable visit took place on January 4, 2023, after which the couple returned to meet Premanand Maharaj on multiple occasions.

Their visits have continued even after Kohli retired from T20I cricket.

Why is Premanand Maharaj's ashram under scrutiny?

The controversy surrounding the ashram intensified after the death of disciple Rasik Dulari on September 25. He died after falling from the fourth floor of the premises.

Mathura Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, including whether Dulari had been experiencing mental stress or depression.

Investigators are also examining his life before he joined the ashram and whether there were changes in his behaviour afterwards. His old mobile phone, new SIM card, call detail records, chats and other digital evidence are being examined as part of the probe.

Police have so far recorded statements from 85 people in connection with the death.
