Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Canada on December 11-12, 2026, as New Delhi and Ottawa look to build on recent efforts to improve bilateral relations and expand cooperation across key sectors.
The High Commission of India in Ottawa announced the visit on Friday, following a telephone conversation between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier this week. The two leaders agreed to work towards tangible outcomes in areas including trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties.
In a post on X, the Indian High Commission said, “Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi will visit Canada on 11–12 December 2026. In the recent conversation with Rt. Hon. PM Mark Carney, both the leaders agreed to build on the positive momentum in ties and work towards concrete outcomes in trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties."
India, Canada push for trade agreement
The proposed visit comes as both countries work to advance negotiations on a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA). India and Canada have set their sights on concluding the deal by the end of 2026.
During their Tuesday conversation, Modi described the exchange as warm and productive and discussed strengthening the India-Canada strategic partnership.
According to a statement from the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, both leaders reiterated their “commitment to conclude negotiations” on the CEPA “at the earliest opportunity, supporting efforts to double two-way trade by 2030”.
The agreement is expected to support efforts to expand commercial ties between the two countries, with trade negotiations emerging as a key focus of their recent engagement.
Ministers hold talks in New Delhi
The diplomatic push coincides with a visit to New Delhi by Canadian Foreign minister Anita Anand and International Trade minister Maninder Sidhu. Their discussions are aimed at advancing negotiations on the proposed trade agreement.
The Canadian Prime Minister’s Office said Modi and Carney had also welcomed increased engagement over the past year in areas such as finance, defence and security, and artificial intelligence.
Both sides discussed ways to build on what the statement described as the “renewed momentum” in bilateral ties.
Modi’s December visit is expected to provide another opportunity for the two governments to pursue cooperation across economic and strategic priorities as they seek to strengthen relations.
