Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has reaffirmed Tehran's commitment to strengthening comprehensive relations with India, describing the deep historical and cultural links between the two countries as a valuable foundation for expanding bilateral ties.
Pezeshkian made the remarks in a message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of India's Independence Day, extending his greetings to the government and people of the country.
The Iranian President said the historical, cultural, civilisational and people-to-people connections between India and Iran could help create stronger bilateral relations based on common interests.
He said Iran was prepared to take further steps to deepen cooperation and safeguard the mutual interests of the two countries on the basis of trust and respect.
Pezeshkian also wished India continued progress and prosperity and expressed hope that the longstanding relationship between New Delhi and Tehran would continue to strengthen.
The message assumes significance as both countries seek to expand cooperation despite a volatile geopolitical environment in West Asia.
Pezeshkian is also expected to travel to New Delhi in September for the 18th BRICS Summit, which India is hosting under its 2026 chairship. The visit is expected to provide an opportunity for bilateral discussions with Modi.
The Iranian President's upcoming visit would come amid heightened tensions in West Asia. Iran has indicated that it sees India as a potential diplomatic partner in efforts to reduce regional tensions.
During his visit to New Delhi in June for the BRICS foreign ministers' meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran would welcome a constructive role by India in de-escalation efforts and maintained that negotiations, rather than military action, offered a way forward.
India and Iran have longstanding economic and strategic links, with connectivity and the Chabahar port among important elements of their bilateral relationship. These issues, along with developments in West Asia, are expected to figure in discussions during Pezeshkian's anticipated India visit.
Pezeshkian's Independence Day message was among several greetings sent by world leaders to India, with leaders from Russia, Australia, France, the Maldives and Bhutan also extending their wishes.
