Abaan Ahmed, the youngest son of late gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, died in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi on Thursday. He was travelling with friends in a white Hyundai Creta when the vehicle crashed into a road divider on the highway.
Another occupant of the SUV, identified as Sonu, also lost his life in the accident, while three others sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
Accident occurred on way to Jhansi jail
According to police, Abaan was travelling to Jhansi to meet his elder brother Ali Ahmed, who is currently lodged in the district jail.
Senior Superintendent of Police BBGTS Murthy said the police received information about the crash at around 10.30 am.
"Two people died in the accident, while three others sustained injuries. The injured are undergoing treatment at the medical college," he said.
Police said the SUV hit the divider after the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle. Further investigation into the accident is underway.
Atiq Ahmed's family
Abaan was the youngest of Atiq Ahmed's five sons. The eldest, Umar Ahmed, is lodged in Lucknow jail, while Ali Ahmed is in Jhansi jail.
The third son, Asad Ahmed, was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi in April 2023. Another son, Ahzam, is currently out, while Abaan died in Thursday's road accident.
Atiq Ahmed was killed in 2023
Former MP Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead on April 15, 2023, while being escorted by police in Prayagraj for a medical examination. The attackers, disguised as journalists, opened fire on the brothers in an incident that was broadcast live on television.
Atiq Ahmed had faced several criminal cases over the years, including charges of murder, extortion and kidnapping. In March 2023, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in one of the cases.
With Abaan Ahmed's death, another member of the family has died just over two years after the killing of Atiq Ahmed and his brother, marking the latest development involving the former gangster-politician's family.
