The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday secured the extradition of Sajeer Palli Mooppam, an accused wanted by Delhi Police in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman, from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The extradition was carried out through coordination between the CBI, the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Delhi Police and UAE authorities, following the issuance of an Interpol Red Notice against the accused.
According to the CBI, Mooppam was traced to the UAE and subsequently arrested by local authorities at the request of Indian law enforcement agencies. Following the completion of legal formalities, he was handed over to a Delhi Police escort team, which brought him to New Delhi on Wednesday.
The agency said a comprehensive chargesheet had already been filed before the competent court in connection with the case.

According to investigators, Mooppam and an accomplice allegedly administered an intoxicating substance to a 20-year-old woman, leaving her incapacitated and unable to resist.
The accused allegedly transported the woman to a hotel, where he used another person's identity credentials to check in and avoid detection.
A CBI spokesperson said the accused subsequently subjected the woman to sexual assault while she was in an incapacitated condition.
The agency said medical examinations and forensic evidence collected during the investigation supported the allegations.
Investigators subsequently gathered evidence and filed a detailed chargesheet before the competent court.

Following a request from Delhi Police, the CBI facilitated the publication of an Interpol Red Notice against Mooppam to trace him internationally.
The notice enabled cooperation with foreign law enforcement authorities and assisted investigators in establishing his whereabouts in the UAE.
Acting on a request from the National Central Bureau (NCB), New Delhi, UAE authorities located and arrested the accused.
The CBI said the extradition was subsequently processed in accordance with applicable legal procedures and arrangements between the two countries.
A Delhi Police escort team travelled to the UAE to take custody of Mooppam after the authorities approved his extradition.
The team returned to New Delhi with the accused on Wednesday, completing the international operation.

The CBI, which functions as India's National Central Bureau for Interpol, coordinates international police cooperation to locate fugitives wanted by Indian law enforcement agencies.
Through Interpol channels and its BHARATPOL platform, the agency facilitates the exchange of information and coordination between domestic investigating agencies and foreign authorities.
The agency said more than 278 wanted individuals had been brought back to India since 2019 through cooperation with foreign law enforcement organisations.
These operations involve locating accused persons abroad, securing their detention where legally permissible and completing extradition or other lawful return procedures.
The latest extradition underscores the role of international police cooperation in pursuing accused persons who leave India while criminal proceedings remain pending.
With Mooppam now back in the country, Delhi Police will proceed with the case in accordance with the applicable legal process.
