Several major artificial intelligence platforms, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and xAI’s Grok, faced disruptions on Thursday, with thousands of users reporting difficulties accessing the services or generating responses. Outage-monitoring platform Downdetector recorded a sharp rise in complaints involving the AI services as users reported errors, failed responses, slow performance and problems accessing conversations.
In India, more than 2,800 reports concerning ChatGPT had been recorded by around 8.20 pm, while Claude had attracted about 170 complaints and Grok more than 40, according to outage-tracking data reported at the time. The disruptions were not necessarily uniform, with some users continuing to access the platforms while others encountered errors.
Multiple platforms affected
OpenAI’s official status history showed that ChatGPT had already experienced an incident involving high error rates in Work Mode earlier on Thursday. The company subsequently said the affected services had fully recovered. Fresh user reports, however, emerged later in the day suggesting problems with ChatGPT for some users.
Anthropic’s official status page confirmed elevated errors affecting multiple Claude models. The company said it had identified the cause of the errors and was working on a fix. Claude.ai, the Claude API, Claude Code and Claude Cowork were showing partial outages during the disruption. Grok also faced problems, with xAI’s status page reporting an outage affecting models on its Android service. “We are experiencing issues with our models,” the status notice said. Some users also reported difficulties with Google’s Gemini, although reports about the extent of the disruption were mixed.
Cause remains unclear
There was no confirmed indication that the problems affecting the different AI platforms were connected, despite the services experiencing disruptions around the same period. The simultaneous difficulties prompted speculation over whether a common piece of internet or cloud infrastructure could have contributed to the problems. However, no company had confirmed a shared cause.
The disruptions underline the growing dependence on generative AI platforms for professional and personal tasks, with outages increasingly capable of affecting developers, businesses and individual users simultaneously. ChatGPT, Claude and Grok are among the world’s most widely used generative AI services and compete across areas ranging from general-purpose chatbots and coding to research and enterprise applications. The situation remained fluid on Thursday evening, with the companies and outage-monitoring services continuing to track performance and user reports.
