The Centre on Sunday extended the tenure of Enforcement Directorate (ED) Director Rahul Navin by one year, allowing the senior Indian Revenue Service officer to continue at the helm of the financial investigation agency beyond his current term. Navin’s two-year tenure as ED Director was due to end on August 13, 2026. The extension will allow him to remain in office for another year.
Navin, a 1993-batch IRS officer of the Income Tax cadre, has extensive experience in taxation and financial investigations. He has spent more than three decades in the Income Tax Department and is regarded as an expert in international taxation, according to his official ED profile. He was appointed the full-time Director of Enforcement in August 2024 after serving as the agency’s acting chief following the completion of Sanjay Kumar Mishra’s tenure.
Navin had been appointed acting ED Director in September 2023 after Mishra demitted office. At the time, he was the agency’s Special Director and its senior-most officer. Before taking charge of the agency, Navin had served in several positions in the Income Tax Department and had also worked as Chief Vigilance Officer at the ED headquarters.
During his career, Navin served in the International Taxation Directorate in Mumbai between 2004 and 2008. According to the ED, he played a role in raising tax demands in several offshore transactions where underlying assets were located in India. His continuation provides leadership continuity at the Enforcement Directorate, which investigates offences under laws dealing with money laundering, foreign exchange violations and fugitive economic offenders.
