The Election Commission (EC) has announced the schedule for by-elections to six vacant seats across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, West Bengal and Assam. Voting for the five Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat will take place on October 6, 2026, while counting of votes will be held on October 9.
The seats fell vacant after the respective MLAs and MP resigned from their positions.
Five Assembly seats up for poll
Two Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu will go to polls: Madurantakam and Dharapuram.
In Puducherry, the Thattanchavady Assembly seat will see a by-election. West Bengal will have voting in two constituencies, Rejinagar and Nandigram.
The bypolls will give political parties an opportunity to contest these vacant constituencies and seek fresh mandates from voters.
Nagaon Lok Sabha seat also vacant
The lone parliamentary seat included in the schedule is Nagaon in Assam. The constituency will also vote on October 6, with the result to be declared on October 9.
All six by-elections have been necessitated by the resignation of the sitting elected representatives, according to the information released by the Election Commission.
The polling and counting dates will apply across the five Assembly and one Lok Sabha constituency covered by the announcement.
