Noted writer Asokan Cheruvil has been chosen as the recipient of the prestigious Vayalar Award for his novel Kattoorkadavu. This annual literary award, instituted by the Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Trust in memory of the celebrated poet and lyricist Vayalar Ramavarma, recognizes outstanding contributions to Malayalam literature. The award includes a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a certificate of merit, and a sculpture designed by renowned artist Kanayi Kunhiraman.
The selection panel for this year's award comprised acclaimed writers Benyamin, Prof. K. S. Ravi Kumar, and Gracy. After reviewing 330 entries, the jury shortlisted six books, from which Kattoorkadavu was ultimately selected. According to the office bearers of the trust, the novel was chosen for its compelling narrative on Kerala's political consciousness.
The award will be presented at a ceremony on October 27 at 5:30 PM, at the Nishagandhi Auditorium, marking the death anniversary of Vayalar Ramavarma. The event is expected to be a celebration of literature and Kerala's rich political history as explored through Kattoorkadavu.
In 2023, the Vayalar Award was given to poet, lyricist, and filmmaker Sreekumaran Thampi for his autobiography Jeevitham Oru Pendulum. This year's honor further cements Asokan Cheruvil's standing in the world of Malayalam literature.
