Arvind Kejriwal was unanimously re-elected national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday, extending his leadership of the organisation as it prepares for its next phase of political and electoral expansion. Kejriwal was chosen for a fourth term during a virtual meeting of the party’s newly constituted National Council, which was attended by 330 members from across the country.
The National Council elected a new National Executive during the meeting, following which the executive unanimously chose Kejriwal as national convenor. His continuation at the helm reinforces his position as the party’s principal national leader and comes as AAP seeks to strengthen its organisation beyond its established bases.
23-member executive formed
AAP also constituted a 23-member National Executive to oversee the party’s organisational and political affairs. Pankaj Gupta was chosen as national secretary, while ND Gupta will continue as national treasurer. The appointments retain continuity in the party’s senior organisational structure alongside Kejriwal’s fresh term as convenor.
The National Executive serves as one of AAP’s key decision-making bodies and plays a central role in shaping organisational strategy and major political decisions. The restructuring is expected to provide the framework for the party’s preparations for upcoming electoral contests and its organisational programmes in different states.
Fourth term at the helm
Kejriwal has headed AAP since its formation in 2012 and has remained the central figure in the party’s evolution from an anti-corruption movement into a national political party. His latest election as national convenor marks his fourth term in the position.
The leadership exercise comes at a significant stage for AAP as it seeks to consolidate its political organisation and chart its strategy for future elections. By unanimously returning Kejriwal to the top post while forming a fresh National Executive, the party has opted for continuity at the leadership level while renewing its principal national organisational body.
