Army officer’s wife booked for allegedly sharing sensitive data with Chinese agents

Chinese operatives allegedly posed as academicians and initially sought articles on environment and geopolitics before shifting focus to defence

Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case against the wife of a senior Indian Army officer for allegedly sharing sensitive information with suspected Chinese intelligence operatives who approached her posing as academicians, officials said on Sunday.

The woman, originally from Telangana and currently residing in the Gandhi Nagar area of Jammu, allegedly came into contact with the operatives through academic interactions without initially realising their suspected links to foreign intelligence agencies.

According to preliminary findings, the suspected operatives gradually gained her confidence by commissioning articles and research-based write-ups before steering the discussions towards subjects involving India's defence and strategic interests.

An FIR, numbered 290/2026, has been registered at Gandhi Nagar Police Station under Sections 3 and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and Sections 152 and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Investigators suspect that individuals linked to Chinese intelligence agencies established contact with the woman by presenting themselves as academicians interested in her writing.

Initially, she was allegedly asked to prepare articles on environmental issues and geopolitical developments, subjects that did not directly involve sensitive military information.

Over time, however, the assignments reportedly shifted towards defence-related matters carrying strategic and operational significance.

Intelligence agencies suspect that the woman may have fallen into what investigators describe as an "intellectual trap", in which seemingly legitimate academic engagements were allegedly used to obtain information of security interest.

The authorities are examining whether the interactions were deliberately structured to extract sensitive details through a gradual process of building trust.

According to sources, the woman came under scrutiny following information alleging her involvement in the collection, possession and transmission of sensitive documents, photographs and electronic data relating to national security.

Investigators suspect that some of the information may have been communicated through encrypted channels to individuals associated with foreign intelligence agencies.

The intelligence input reportedly referred to contacts linked to China and other foreign countries, raising concerns that information of strategic importance could have been exposed, either knowingly or unknowingly.

However, the precise nature of the material allegedly collected or transmitted has not been disclosed.

The identities of the suspected foreign contacts and the extent of any information exchange also remain under investigation.

Section 3 of the Official Secrets Act deals with spying and activities involving information that could prejudice national security, while Section 5 concerns the unauthorised communication, retention or handling of protected information.

The BNS provisions invoked in the FIR relate to acts endangering India's sovereignty, unity and integrity and to criminal conspiracy.

Investigators are attempting to establish how the woman came into contact with the suspected operatives, the nature of the assignments she undertook and whether any protected military information was actually passed to unauthorised recipients.

Police have not publicly disclosed whether searches have been conducted, electronic devices seized or documents recovered in connection with the case.

There has also been no official disclosure about the suspected foreign operatives or the specific defence-related subjects allegedly discussed during the interactions.

The investigation remains at a preliminary stage, and the allegations have yet to be established in court.
