SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI: What changes and what doesn't in Elon Musk's planned rebrand

Elon Musk plans to rename SpaceX's AI unit SpaceXAI as SpaceXSI, following the Trump administration's shift from 'Artificial Intelligence' to 'Super Intelligence'

Elon Musk plans to rename SpaceX’s artificial intelligence unit from SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, adopting “Super Intelligence” in place of “Artificial Intelligence”.

Musk confirmed the proposed change in a post on X after a user asked whether SpaceXAI could be renamed SpaceXSI. He said the company would make the change. However, the rebranding has not yet been completed, and Musk has not announced a timeline for when the new name will officially take effect.

SpaceXAI name could soon become SpaceXSI

The SpaceXAI account on X was still using its existing name when the latest report was published, indicating that the proposed rebrand had not yet been implemented.

For now, there is also no announcement of a new AI model, product or technology from SpaceX connected to the name change. The move is understood as a change in terminology and branding rather than the introduction of a new technology.

The planned switch from “AI” to “SI” comes shortly after US President Donald Trump changed the terminology used by the federal government.

Why is Musk making the change?

Trump signed an executive order on September 29 titled “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence”. The order directs US executive departments and agencies, where legally permitted, to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” instead of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” across official communications, websites, reports and policy documents.

However, the order applies to the US executive branch and does not require private companies to change how they describe their AI operations.

Musk’s decision therefore appears to be a voluntary branding move rather than a requirement imposed on SpaceX.

What does ‘Super Intelligence’ mean?

The White House order uses “Super Intelligence” and “SI” for technologies covered by the existing federal definition of artificial intelligence.

The terminology should not, by itself, be taken to mean that SpaceX has developed a new or more advanced form of intelligence. The order also asks the White House science and technology adviser to propose legislative language for a federal definition of “Super Intelligence” and “SI” within 60 days.

That could lead to a more specific definition of the term in the future.

SpaceX technology remains unchanged for now

There is currently no indication that SpaceX is changing its AI technology alongside the proposed name change.

Musk has only confirmed the intention to rename the unit. No new model, architecture, product or breakthrough has been announced as part of the rebranding.

The broader technology industry also continues to use “AI” as the standard term. While the Trump administration has adopted “Super Intelligence” for certain government communications and Musk has indicated that SpaceX will follow the terminology, there is no clear evidence of a wider shift from AI to SI.

Until the rebrand is implemented, SpaceXAI remains the unit’s public-facing name.
