Meta is rolling out an update for its AI glasses that will automatically stop camera recording if the recording indicator is covered while the device is filming.
The company said the change is part of its efforts to strengthen tamper detection and address potential misuse of the camera-equipped glasses. The update builds on measures introduced earlier this year to prevent users from interfering with the recording indicator.
Camera to stop if recording light is covered
The glasses use an LED to signal when their camera is capturing content. Under the new update, if someone starts recording and then physically covers the LED, the camera will stop recording.
Meta Vice President of Wearables Alex Himel said the feature is intended to make it harder to conceal camera activity by interfering with the indicator.
“This update is designed to stop camera recording if someone starts filming and then covers the LED. This builds on Meta’s continued improvements we announced in July that disable glasses cameras if physical tampering is detected,” the release said.
The latest measure therefore adds to Meta’s existing tamper detection system, which can disable the camera when physical interference with the glasses is detected.
Meta launches awareness campaign
Along with the technical update, Meta has launched an awareness campaign explaining how the capture LED on its AI glasses works.
The company said AI glasses are becoming increasingly common, but not everyone may be familiar with their recording indicators. The campaign is intended to explain what the light means and help people recognise when the glasses are capturing content.
“We’ve also launched our Capture LED awareness campaign. AI glasses are a fast-growing technology that not everyone is familiar with. As they grow in popularity, we want everyone to know how they work. We’re launching an education and awareness campaign to explain the capture LED light and what it means. We put it there so others know if someone is capturing the moment,” it added.
The update and campaign focus on the same issue: ensuring the glasses’ recording indicator cannot be easily concealed and that people around the device understand what the LED signals when the camera is in use.
