Google’s Gemini app has crossed one billion monthly active users, becoming the fastest-growing product in the technology giant’s history, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced. The milestone also makes Gemini the 14th Google product to surpass the one-billion-user mark, underscoring the rapid adoption of generative artificial intelligence tools worldwide. Google said the figure relates specifically to people using the Gemini app every month.
Announcing the achievement, Pichai thanked users and the teams responsible for building the AI platform. Gemini has expanded rapidly as Google integrates its artificial intelligence technology across smartphones and its wider ecosystem of products and services.
The latest figure represents another significant jump in Gemini’s user base. The app had around 750 million monthly active users in February 2026 and subsequently reached about 900 million by the time of Google I/O earlier this year. It has now added enough users to cross the billion mark.
The growth places Gemini among Google’s biggest consumer products and strengthens the company's position in an increasingly competitive generative AI market.
Google also released figures offering a glimpse into how people are using Gemini. According to the company, 63 per cent of users interact with Gemini through voice, reflecting the growing use of AI assistants for conversational queries rather than conventional text-based searches. Gemini is also generating more than 150 billion tokens every day, while users are creating over 20 million images daily through the app. The company said more than 100 million people use Gemini on iOS devices, even though Google's Android ecosystem remains an important distribution channel for the AI assistant.
Gemini's rapid expansion comes as competition among the world's leading artificial intelligence companies intensifies. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has also surpassed the one-billion monthly-user threshold, highlighting the extraordinary speed at which generative AI services have entered mainstream use. Google has increasingly placed Gemini at the centre of its AI strategy, incorporating the technology across its products while expanding the standalone app's capabilities. The billion-user milestone represents a dramatic rise for a service that emerged from Google's Bard chatbot before being rebranded as Gemini in 2024. Pichai indicated that more developments were on the way, with Google expected to continue expanding Gemini's capabilities as competition in consumer AI accelerates.
