Mercedes-Benz has launched the facelifted Mercedes-Maybach S-Class in India at Rs 3.35 crore, ex-showroom, introducing the flagship limousine in the S 580e plug-in hybrid guise and marking the arrival of the first electrified Maybach model in the country.
The new S 580e represents a major powertrain shift from the outgoing Maybach S-Class, while retaining the model’s traditional focus on rear-seat luxury. Mercedes-Benz has allocated just 30 units to India in the first batch, adding an element of exclusivity to a model that already sits at the top end of the company’s limousine range.
First hybrid Maybach
The biggest change sits underneath the bonnet. The India-spec Maybach S 580e uses a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine producing 443hp and 560Nm, paired with an electric motor developing 160hp and 480Nm. Combined system output stands at 585hp and 750Nm, with all-wheel drive offered as standard.
A 22kWh battery allows the limousine to travel up to 98km solely on electric power. Mercedes claims it can reach speeds of up to 140kph without firing up the petrol engine, potentially allowing many short urban journeys to be completed entirely on electricity.
The S 580e is Mercedes-Benz’s third plug-in hybrid offering in India after the updated S-Class and the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid.
Fast charging included
Despite its emphasis on luxury rather than outright efficiency, the Maybach receives a fairly comprehensive charging package. An 11kW AC onboard charger is offered, while DC fast charging at up to 60kW is supported.
The plug-in hybrid system offers Maybach, Electric and Battery Hold driving modes. Drivers can also alter the level of energy recuperation, including a setting that allows one-pedal driving.
Mercedes quotes a WLTP-certified fuel efficiency figure of 34.48kpl, although real-world consumption will depend heavily on charging frequency and how much of a journey is completed using battery power.
Luxury built around rear seats
As with every Maybach S-Class, the rear compartment remains the centrepiece. The India-spec S 580e comes as a four-seater with individual Executive seats separated by a full-length business console.
The Executive seats can recline by up to 43 degrees, compared with 38 degrees in the regular S-Class, and feature heating, ventilation and massage functions. The Rear Comfort Package Plus is standard and adds fold-out tables, wireless charging, ambient lighting for the rear compartment and temperature-controlled cup holders.
Mercedes has also replaced the previous tablet-based rear controller with two individual smartphone-style remotes, allowing passengers to operate several vehicle and comfort functions.
Superscreen dominates dashboard
The front cabin adopts Mercedes’ latest MBUX Superscreen arrangement. The dashboard integrates the central infotainment display and a separate screen for the front passenger, while the driver receives a freestanding 3D instrument display.
Maybach-specific graphics and rose-gold detailing distinguish the system from the regular S-Class. Other equipment includes augmented-reality navigation and head-up display, two rear entertainment screens with wireless headphones and a 31-speaker Burmester 4D surround-sound system.
The India-spec cabin is finished in Maybach-exclusive Crystal White and Silver Grey Pearl Nappa leather. Manufaktur piano-lacquer trim, a Crystal White Nappa leather roof liner and Manufaktur trim on the seat backs further distinguish the flagship.
Bigger illuminated grille
Styling changes largely mirror those introduced on the facelifted S-Class, but Mercedes has added several Maybach-specific elements. The grille is 20 per cent larger and illuminated, while retaining the vertical slats traditionally associated with Maybach. An illuminated Maybach wordmark sits above it, accompanied by an illuminated Mercedes three-pointed star on the bonnet.
Larger Digital Light headlamps incorporate three-pointed-star daytime running lights, while rose-gold embellishments replace the blue accents used on the regular S-Class. The Maybach emblem on the D-pillar is illuminated, and the rear lamps feature a triple three-pointed-star LED signature.
At 180mm longer than the long-wheelbase S-Class, the Maybach continues to make its additional rear passenger space obvious from the outside. The India model rides on 20-inch forged Maybach wheels featuring counterweighted Mercedes logos designed to remain upright as the wheels rotate.
Air suspension standard
Air suspension and rear-axle steering are standard, reflecting the car’s focus on isolating rear passengers from road disturbances while retaining manoeuvrability despite its considerable dimensions.
The dedicated Maybach driving mode alters the vehicle’s responses to prioritise smoothness and rear-seat comfort, while the electrified powertrain allows the limousine to move in near silence during electric operation.
Rs 97 lakh premium
At Rs 3.35 crore before options, the new Maybach costs Rs 97 lakh more than the recently introduced regular S-Class Manufaktur Edition AMG Line. Mercedes says Maybach versions account for around half of all S-Class sales in India, illustrating the unusually strong demand for the ultra-luxury derivative at the top of its sedan portfolio.
The S 580e’s arrival also reflects a different approach to electrifying the highest end of Mercedes’ combustion-engine luxury range. Instead of abandoning the petrol engine altogether, the plug-in hybrid combines a substantial electric-only range with the flexibility of a conventional long-distance powertrain.
With only 30 cars allocated in the initial batch, the facelifted S 580e will remain a rare sight even by Maybach standards. Its launch nevertheless marks an important shift for the nameplate in India, bringing electrification into a limousine whose defining priorities remain space, isolation and rear-seat comfort.
