Mahindra has launched the updated three-door Thar, now christened the Thar OG, at a starting price of Rs 10.32 lakh, bringing refreshed styling, additional features and a revised variant line-up to the popular lifestyle SUV.
The Thar OG continues to be offered with petrol and diesel powertrains and rear-wheel-drive as well as four-wheel-drive configurations. Prices range from Rs 10.32 lakh to Rs 17.49 lakh, ex-showroom, before options, keeping the three-door model positioned below the larger Thar Roxx.
The OG suffix — short for “Original” — also gives Mahindra a clearer distinction between the three-door Thar and the five-door Thar Roxx.
Design gets refreshed
The Thar OG retains the familiar upright, boxy silhouette of the outgoing three-door model rather than undergoing a major redesign. Changes instead focus on cosmetic details intended to freshen the SUV while preserving its recognisable character.
Among the updates are revised exterior elements and new detailing inspired partly by the Thar Roxx. Mahindra has retained the round headlamp treatment, prominent wheel arches, exposed hinges and tailgate-mounted spare wheel that have become defining elements of the current-generation Thar.
The cabin has also received updates, with Mahindra adding equipment and convenience features that were missing from the earlier model. The changes are aimed at addressing some of the usability gaps between the three-door Thar and newer SUVs, including its larger five-door sibling.
Three engines continue
Mechanically, the Thar OG retains the existing powertrain choices. The entry-level rear-wheel-drive version continues with the 1.5-litre diesel engine, while the larger 2.2-litre diesel remains available higher up the range, including with four-wheel drive.
The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine also continues, giving buyers a petrol alternative. Depending on the engine and variant, manual and automatic gearbox choices are available.
The continuation of the 1.5-litre diesel is particularly important for the entry price of the Thar because the smaller engine helps the rear-wheel-drive model qualify for a more favourable tax structure than larger-engined versions.
For buyers seeking the Thar’s traditional off-road capability, the 4WD versions continue to offer the hardware required for more demanding terrain, while the rear-wheel-drive models remain targeted at customers primarily using the SUV on the road.
Thar family expands
The updated model arrives as Mahindra increasingly treats Thar as a broader product family rather than a single SUV. The three-door model established the modern Thar as a lifestyle vehicle after the second generation was launched in 2020, while the five-door Thar Roxx subsequently broadened its appeal by adding more cabin space and practicality.
Renaming the three-door version Thar OG allows Mahindra to position it as the more compact and traditional member of the family.
The Rs 10.32 lakh starting price also keeps the model accessible to buyers seeking the Thar design without moving to the larger and more expensive 4WD variants.
With the refresh, Mahindra has largely avoided altering the formula that made the three-door Thar popular, instead concentrating on equipment and styling changes while retaining the petrol and diesel engines, RWD and 4WD choices and the SUV’s familiar proportions.
