SC issues notice to UP Govt over banke bihari temple management ordinance

The Supreme Court of India has agreed to hear a challenge questioning the validity of a recent ordinance enacted by the Uttar Pradesh government concerning the management of the renowned Banke Bihari Temple in Mathura. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and KV Vishwanathan issued a notice to the state government, seeking its response. The petition argues that the ordinance infringes upon the fundamental rights of the temple's hereditary priests and interferes with religious practices. The ordinance, passed earlier this year, aims to establish a committee to oversee the temple’s administration, citing the need for better crowd management and improved facilities for devotees. Petitioners contend that such state intervention violates the rights of traditional servitors who have been managing the temple for generations. The Court has posted the matter for further hearing after receiving responses from the state.
