‘CJI Kant like fatherly figure’: SCBA chief Pradeep Rai after election win

After winning the SCBA election, Pradeep Rai praised CJI Kant's guidance and pledged close cooperation between the Bar and bench

Senior advocate Pradeep Rai, who was elected president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), on Wednesday described Chief Justice of India Surya Kant as a “fatherly figure” and said the newly elected office-bearers would work closely with the judiciary.

Rai made the remarks after CJI Kant congratulated him and other members of the new SCBA executive committee following the election results.

Rai assures support to Supreme Court bench

Responding to the CJI, Rai said, "Your Lordships' guidance is precious. You are the fatherly figures we can always approach," assuring the bench of the Bar's cooperation.

CJI Kant had earlier described the relationship between the Bar and the bench as that of a “small family”. He said, “We are a small family. We have always looked after each other and will continue to maintain that coordinated relationship,” while congratulating the newly elected office-bearers.

Rai reiterated his commitment to maintaining that relationship, telling the judges, "My Lords, this Bar is entirely with your Lordships. We will cooperate 100 per cent and support the bench in every way.”

CJI asks new team to help young lawyers

CJI Kant also urged the newly elected SCBA leadership to “lead the bar by example”. He expressed hope that the association would take up initiatives aimed at supporting young lawyers as they establish themselves in the profession.

The focus on younger members comes alongside Rai's pre-election promises on advocate welfare. He had pledged to push for medical security cover of up to ₹50 lakh and merit-based scholarships for children of SCBA members.

Rai secured 822 votes in Tuesday's election, with the results being announced late in the night. He had previously served as SCBA vice president.

Senior Advocate Rahul Kaushik was elected vice-president, while advocate Pragya Baghel became secretary. Advocate Amarendra Kumar Singh was elected treasurer and advocate Meneesh Dubey joint secretary.

Rai succeeds senior advocate Vikas Singh, who served as SCBA president during 2025-26.

The new leadership is set to take charge with an emphasis on maintaining coordination between the judiciary and the Bar while addressing issues concerning advocates.
