The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday cautioned Indian nationals against joining the Russian armed forces, warning of the serious risks and dangers associated with military recruitment. The advisory came amid continuing concerns over Indian citizens being recruited into the Russian military during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The ministry urged Indian nationals to exercise caution and avoid offers involving service in the Russian armed forces. India has repeatedly raised concerns with Russian authorities over the recruitment of its citizens and has sought the release and repatriation of those serving in the Russian military.
MEA warns against military recruitment
The government's latest warning highlighted the dangers faced by Indian nationals who accept recruitment offers involving the Russian armed forces. The ministry reiterated its position that Indian citizens should stay away from such engagements because of the risks to their lives and safety.
New Delhi has previously taken up cases involving Indian nationals who were recruited into the Russian military, including individuals who reportedly travelled abroad after being offered employment opportunities. Some were subsequently deployed in combat-related roles during the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
India continues diplomatic engagement
The Indian government has maintained that the recruitment of its nationals into foreign military operations remains a matter of serious concern. It has repeatedly engaged Russian authorities through diplomatic channels to secure the early discharge and safe return of Indian citizens serving in the country's armed forces.
The latest advisory reinforces the government's warning against accepting military recruitment offers that could expose Indian nationals to dangerous conditions. The MEA has urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid involvement in activities that could jeopardise their safety.
