"If they were attacked, we would be there": Trump on US-India defence ties

Responding to a question on India-US defence cooperation, Trump described the bilateral relationship as great and indicated that strategic trust between both countries goes beyond written agreements

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday underscored the strength of ties between Washington and New Delhi, saying that despite the absence of a formal mutual defence treaty, the United States would stand by India in the event of a security threat.

Responding to a question on India-US defence cooperation, Trump described the bilateral relationship as "great" and indicated that strategic trust between the two countries goes beyond written agreements.

"Although we do not have a formal defence pact, our relationship is very strong. If India were to face an attack, we would be there to assist," Trump said.

In a lighter moment, the US President linked his remarks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, suggesting that the current warmth in bilateral relations is closely tied to the personal rapport between the two leaders.

"As long as he is the leader, we will be there to help. If there is a different leader in the future, I can't say what the situation would be," Trump remarked.

Prime Minister Modi, meanwhile, highlighted the growing momentum in India-US ties, noting that relations have gained fresh energy since his last meeting with Trump in Washington.

"Our discussions in Washington gave a new direction to the partnership. Since then, there has been renewed momentum and a stronger sense of cooperation. Both sides are working closely to achieve the goals we have set, and progress is being made at a rapid pace," Modi said.

The interaction between the two leaders took place in Evian, marking their first face-to-face meeting since their summit in Washington earlier this year. The meeting comes at a time when India and the United States are exploring a possible trade agreement and closely coordinating on developments in West Asia.

Modi also commended Trump's efforts aimed at easing tensions in the Middle East and advancing peace initiatives in the region.
