Tom Holland’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ may be heading back to theatres after its massive worldwide box-office run. According to a new report by Variety, the Marvel-Sony film is set to be re-released later this year with additional footage.
The makers have not announced a release date for the re-release yet. The film has already collected nearly $2.5 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of the year and the third-highest-grossing film of all time, according to the report.
Why the re-release matters
A second theatrical run could give ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ another chance to add to its already huge box-office total. The film currently stands at $950.6 million in North America.
The re-release could also come ahead of Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which is scheduled as another major release for the franchise. The film features Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel universe and brings back several original Avengers.
Released on July 31, ‘Brand New Day’ also became a major success in North America, surpassing the previous records held by ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Avatar’. The film is now within reach of the $1 billion domestic milestone, although that figure could depend on whether the additional theatrical run takes place.
‘Brand New Day’ breaks records in India
The Tom Holland-led film also had a strong run in India. It recorded the biggest opening day for a non-Indian film in the country, surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
Its total collection in India has crossed Rs 500 crore, making it the highest-grossing foreign film in the country and putting it ahead of the previous record held by ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
What is ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ about?
The film follows Peter Parker as he attempts to rebuild his life after a spell causes his friends and family to forget his identity.
Alongside Holland, the cast includes Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Tramell Tillman and Florence Pugh.
Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film, with Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers credited as screenwriters. The film also marks an important step for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, introducing Mutants, including Jean Grey, played by Sink.
