Tom Cruise has weighed in on the growing use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking, saying technology may become a bigger part of the industry but cannot replace the value of human creativity.
The actor discussed AI while appearing at a BAFTA Life in Pictures event in London, where he reflected on his career and the changes he has witnessed in the film industry.
Cruise says AI will become part of filmmaking
During a conversation with BAFTA moderator Edith Bowman, Cruise acknowledged that AI's role in filmmaking is likely to expand. However, he stressed that filmmakers should continue to focus on human creativity and audiences' desire to see authentic elements on screen.
“Here's the thing, there is nothing like human. Creatives must keep creating. You know, it is coming and it's going to happen. But people want to see real things.”
Cruise's comments drew applause from the audience. His remarks come at a time when AI tools are increasingly being explored across different stages of film production.
While accepting that the technology is coming, Cruise placed emphasis on the role of people behind movies and the creative process that goes into making them.
Tom Cruise backs cinema experience
The actor also spoke about his continued support for the theatrical experience. Cruise said he wants to keep the cinema experience alive because films can bring people together.
He clarified that he does not have an issue with streaming platforms, but believes watching a movie in a theatre offers a different experience. According to Cruise, audiences continue to enjoy watching films together and sharing that experience.
He also said that he “always believes in humanity.”
Cruise’s next film is ‘Digger’
After concluding his run with the ‘Mission Impossible’ franchise last year, Cruise is now preparing for his next project, ‘Digger’, directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu.
The film follows a powerful man who embarks on a desperate mission to save humanity after his actions create a major threat. He must find a way to prevent the resulting disaster from destroying everything.
Cruise stars alongside Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons.
‘Digger’ is scheduled to release in theatres on October 2.
