Rashmika Mandanna is set to portray legendary Carnatic vocalist MS Subbulakshmi in an upcoming biopic, with the actor describing the opportunity to bring one of India’s most celebrated musical icons to the screen as an “absolute honour”. The project, titled M.S. – A Legacy on Screen, will be directed by Jersey filmmaker Gowtam Tinnanuri, while Anirudh Ravichander will compose the music. The film was announced on Tuesday, coinciding with the 110th birth anniversary of Subbulakshmi.
Taking to Instagram, Rashmika confirmed her casting and expressed her gratitude at being chosen for the role. The film is expected to trace different stages of Subbulakshmi’s life and extraordinary musical journey, from her early years and rise in Carnatic music to her emergence as an internationally recognised cultural figure. The role is expected to be among the most demanding of Rashmika’s career, requiring her to recreate the mannerisms, stage presence and musical world of a performer whose voice became synonymous with Carnatic and devotional music for generations.
First look awaited
The makers are set to unveil Rashmika’s full first look as Subbulakshmi on September 16 as part of the film’s formal launch in Chennai. Kamal Haasan is expected to attend the event as chief guest, while the Indian Choral Ensemble will perform some of Subbulakshmi’s celebrated compositions as a musical tribute. The project brings together producers Allu Aravind, Bunny Vasu and Rockline Venkatesh, with the makers positioning it as a major pan-India production celebrating the singer’s life and legacy.
Rashmika’s casting follows months of speculation over who would portray Subbulakshmi on screen. Several names had previously been linked to the project before the makers formally confirmed Rashmika. Her selection also marks another significant biographical role for an actor who has worked across Telugu, Tamil and Hindi cinema and established herself as one of the country’s most prominent pan-India stars.
An enduring legacy
Born in Madurai in 1916, Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi began performing at a young age and went on to become one of the most influential figures in Indian classical music. Her career extended well beyond concert halls, with her performances introducing Carnatic music to audiences across India and abroad. She also had an association with cinema early in her career, appearing in films including Sevasadanam, Sakuntalai, Savithri and Meera.
Subbulakshmi performed at the United Nations in 1966 and became the first musician to receive the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 1998. She was also the first Indian musician to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award. Her renditions of devotional compositions continue to be heard widely decades after they were recorded.
With Tinnanuri directing and Anirudh handling the music, the biopic is expected to place Subbulakshmi’s musical legacy at the heart of its narrative. Further details about the film, including its wider cast and production schedule, are expected to emerge following the formal launch.
