Rajkummar Rao-starrer Srikanth was honoured with the Best Hindi Film award at the 72nd National Film Awards Tuesday, with President Droupadi Murmu presenting the award to producer Bhushan Kumar and director Tushar Hiranandani at a ceremony in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat.
The biographical drama, based on the life of visually impaired industrialist Srikanth Bolla, was among the films recognised for cinematic achievements in 2024. The ceremony was held at Ekta Nagar, home to the Statue of Unity, marking the first time the National Film Awards were presented outside New Delhi.
Team receives honour
Bhushan Kumar and Hiranandani received the Rajat Kamal for Srikanth, which stars Rao in the title role alongside Jyotika, Alaya F and Sharad Kelkar.
Kumar described receiving the National Award as a “proud and humbling moment”, saying the team had been drawn to Bolla’s determination and refusal to allow circumstances to define his ambitions. He credited Hiranandani for bringing sensitivity to the story and praised the cast for their performances.
Hiranandani said Bolla’s life was not merely about overcoming challenges but also about having the courage to dream beyond what others considered possible. He said receiving the award from the President was a moment he would cherish.
Released in 2024, Srikanth traces Bolla’s journey from facing barriers as a visually impaired student to becoming an entrepreneur. Rao’s performance formed the centre of the film, with Jyotika playing his teacher and mentor.
Big honours at ceremony
The 72nd National Film Awards recognised films certified during 2024. Article 370 received the Best Feature Film honour, while Yami Gautam was named Best Actress for her performance in the film.
Mammootty and Kartik Aaryan shared the Best Actor honour for Bramayugam and Chandu Champion, respectively. Rajkumar Periasamy won Best Direction for Amaran, while Kalki 2898 AD was named Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
Randeep Hooda received the Best Debut Director award for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar. Veteran actor Anant Nag was conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to Indian cinema.
The National Film Awards, instituted in 1954, recognise achievements across feature films, non-feature films and writing on cinema.
