The ‘Bridgerton’ universe is set to explore another romance, this time taking viewers back to the early years of Violet Bridgerton and her relationship with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. Netflix has announced a new limited series centred on the couple whose love story eventually led to the family at the heart of the hit period drama.
The upcoming spin-off will follow a younger Violet as she falls in love with Edmund, the father of her eight children. While the original series focuses on the romantic lives of the Bridgerton siblings, the new project will explore the relationship that shaped their parents’ lives together.
Shonda Rhimes returns to lead new spin-off
‘Bridgerton’ creator Shonda Rhimes will co-write the series, serve as its showrunner and executive-produce it alongside Nicholas Nardini. Rhimes has been instrumental in building the franchise and previously explored Violet’s personal life through the main series.
Violet, played by Ruth Gemmell in ‘Bridgerton’, is known for her warmth, wisdom and commitment to her children. The spin-off will shift the focus from her familiar role as the family’s matriarch to her younger years and the romance that preceded it.
The announcement adds another chapter to the franchise, which has found success by exploring love stories against the backdrop of Regency-era society.
'Bridgerton' Season 5 filming underway
The new series has been announced as production on ‘Bridgerton’ Season 5 continues in London. The upcoming season will centre on Francesca Bridgerton, the family’s introverted third daughter, and her romance with Michaela, a bold heiress.
Netflix has also greenlit Season 6, ensuring that the stories of the Bridgerton family will continue to unfold alongside the newly announced spin-off.
How the Violet series follows 'Queen Charlotte'
The Violet-focused project will be the second major spin-off from the ‘Bridgerton’ universe, following ‘Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story’. That series explored the relationship between Queen Charlotte and King George III, offering a closer look at their lives before the events of the main show.
Like ‘Queen Charlotte’, the upcoming series will revisit the past to tell a love story connected to the wider ‘Bridgerton’ world. This time, the focus will be on Violet and Edmund, giving viewers a closer look at the romance behind one of the show's central families.
