'Mirzapur: The Movie' has made a strong start at the box office, turning the popular streaming franchise's move to theatres into an early success. The film had collected Rs 9.35 crore net by 3 pm on its opening day, according to Sacnilk.
The opening is particularly notable because the film does not rely on a traditional Bollywood superstar as its central draw. Instead, its appeal comes from the established popularity of characters played by Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu.
Strong response in mass centres
The film's morning shows recorded around 26 per cent occupancy, with particularly strong traction reported in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi. Trade expectations had initially placed the opening at Rs 18-20 crore, but those estimates were revised upwards as advance interest and early response pointed to a bigger start.
With evening and night shows still to come, the film is expected to build on its morning performance. The Telugu-dubbed version, however, has contributed less than Rs 10 lakh so far, leaving Hindi as the overwhelming source of its opening-day earnings.
The film is currently on course to cross Rs 25 crore on day one, which would put it ahead of recent releases such as 'Saiyaara', which opened at Rs 22 crore, and 'Awarapan 2', which registered Rs 21.50 crore.
Familiar faces return to Mirzapur
Directed by Gurmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, the film is presented by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment. Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar have produced it, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani as co-producers.
The story brings back several familiar characters from the series while introducing new ones. Pankaj Tripathi returns as Kaleen Bhaiya, while Ali Fazal plays Guddu and Divyenndu returns as Munna Tripathi. Jitendra Kumar takes over the role of Bablu Pandit, while Ravi Kishan joins the cast as a new character.
Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Abhishek Banerjee, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Harshita Shekhar Gaur and others reprise their roles.
Film expands the Mirzapur world
Set in 2018, the movie moves beyond Mirzapur and brings Rajasthan's desert landscape into the story. Ravi Kishan's character, a Jaisalmer-based drug supplier, emerges as a challenger to Kaleen Bhaiya's control.
The film retains the series' themes of power, rivalry, family and loyalty while presenting the story in a feature-film format. A post-credits sequence also hints that the franchise could continue on the big screen.
