'Exciting, unexpected & beautiful': Robert Downey Jr picks Doctor Doom over Iron Man in MCU return

After more than a decade as Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr says playing Doctor Doom has allowed him to experience what he had been missing

Robert Downey Jr is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after seven years, but this time he will be on the other side of the superhero battle. The actor, who played Iron Man for more than a decade, will take on the role of Marvel villain Doctor Doom in 'Avengers: Doomsday'.

And while the change marks a major shift for the actor, Downey appears to be enjoying the opportunity to play the villain more than his iconic superhero role.

Speaking at Disney's D23 fan event in the US, Downey discussed what it has been like to return to the MCU as Victor Von Doom. He appeared alongside fellow MCU returnees Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell.

Reflecting on being separated from the heroes on set, Downey said, “It was really weird being the guy — everyone else is hanging out, they’re the good heroes, and I’m [in] this mask and this hood. I’m like, 'They’re all on one side of the camera, and I guess they’re all mad at me or something.”

Asked whether he preferred playing Doom or Iron Man, the actor chose his new character.

“Because you don’t say yes because you can; it has to feel right. And I think that in Doomsday, what happens to this key relationship is so exciting, unexpected, and beautiful. I will say Doom, for now, because I got to really observe what I’ve been missing the whole time, just everybody else.”

'Avengers: Doomsday' brings heroes together

Marvel Studios recently showcased Downey's Victor Von Doom during its D23 presentation, giving fans a closer look at the character and his role in the upcoming film.

'Avengers: Doomsday', directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, will bring together characters from multiple corners of the Marvel universe. The story is expected to involve heroes from Earth-616, Earth-828 and other universes as they face Doom and a threat to the multiverse.
