The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a fresh examination for UGC-NET June 2026 candidates appearing for English, Commerce and Sociology after several errors were reported in the question papers.
The decision was taken after candidates raised complaints about the three papers. NTA subsequently formed a committee to examine the issues and review the question papers.
Why are three UGC NET papers being conducted again?
According to NTA, the committee found multiple factual, typographical and translation-related errors in the papers. These included misspelled names of scholars, distorted book titles, mistakes in question stems and grammatical errors.
The review also pointed to problems involving gender and number agreement, punctuation and the use of non-standard terms for established concepts. A significant number of questions were also found to have been repeated from earlier examinations.
Considering the extent of the issues, the committee recommended conducting the three papers again rather than addressing the errors only through the answer-key challenge process.
NTA said the defects were serious enough to affect the required standards of fairness and accuracy in the examination.
UGC NET 2026 re-exam dates
The fresh examination will be held in September. The schedule is:
English: September 9, Shift 1, 9 am to 12 noon
Commerce: September 9, Shift 2, 3 pm to 6 pm
Sociology: September 10, Shift 1, 9 am to 12 noon
Candidates appearing for these three subjects will not have to pay any additional examination fee.
Details about examination cities, centres and admit cards will be released separately through the official NTA website.
What happens to the other 84 subjects?
The re-examination will not affect the result process for the remaining 84 UGC-NET subjects.
NTA said results for these subjects, for which the answer-key challenge process had already been conducted, will be declared as scheduled.
The agency also clarified that the re-examination will not delay the allocation of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) seats or the issuance of e-certificates for candidates qualifying for Assistant Professor positions and admission to PhD programmes in these 84 subjects.
Candidates appearing for English, Commerce and Sociology have been advised to keep checking the official NTA website for updates on their examination centres, city intimation and admit cards.
