Why fuel prices differ across cities

The retail price of petrol and diesel depends on several factors. These include international crude oil prices, the rupee-dollar exchange rate, government taxes, transportation costs and local demand and supply conditions.

The price paid by consumers also includes the cost of the petroleum product, taxes and other charges.

Crude oil prices remain in focus

International crude oil prices have remained volatile amid geopolitical tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.

India remains particularly sensitive to changes in global crude prices because it imports about 85% of its crude oil requirement. Any major movement in international prices can therefore affect the domestic fuel market.

Motorists should check the rate displayed at their local fuel station before purchasing fuel, as online prices may differ depending on the source and the time at which the rates were updated.
