July auto retail sales rise 25.9% YoY to record 25.91 lakh units; PV inventory remains elevated

All major segments posted best-ever July performance; passenger vehicle inventories remain elevated despite robust demand

Vehicle retail sales in India touched an all-time high for the month of July, rising 25.89 per cent year-on-year to 25.91 lakh units, driven by strong demand across all major vehicle segments, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on Thursday. While annual growth remained robust, sales were largely unchanged compared with June, slipping 0.16 per cent sequentially as heavy monsoon rains and the traditionally subdued Aadi and Shravan period affected buying activity in several parts of the country.

Two-wheelers lead growth

Two-wheelers, which account for the largest share of the domestic automobile market, recorded retail sales of 18.18 lakh units during July. The segment registered a 28.25 per cent increase over the same month last year but declined 1.26 per cent compared with June. Passenger vehicle retail sales climbed 19.13 per cent year-on-year to 4.16 lakh units, although they fell 1.68 per cent on a month-on-month basis. Three-wheeler sales rose 16.16 per cent annually and 6.89 per cent sequentially to 1.33 lakh units, while commercial vehicle sales increased 24.04 per cent year-on-year to 99,666 units.

Best-ever July for auto retail

Commenting on the performance, FADA Vice-President Sai Giridhar said July marked a historic milestone for India's automobile retail industry. "July 2026 has etched itself into Indian auto retail history. For the first time on record, every vehicle category posted its best-ever July performance," he said. According to FADA, this was the strongest July growth outside the pandemic-affected base years, with retail sales remaining broadly stable despite a strong June.

GST reforms, finance support demand

The association attributed the sharp year-on-year increase to a combination of factors, including improved affordability following GST 2.0, easier access to retail financing, favourable festival timing and a low base from the previous year. However, heavy rainfall and flooding in several regions tempered demand on a sequential basis during the month.

Alternative-fuel vehicles gain ground

FADA highlighted a significant shift in the passenger vehicle market, with alternative-fuel vehicles—including CNG, hybrid and electric models—continuing to narrow the gap with conventional petrol vehicles. Alternative-fuel vehicles accounted for 40.59 per cent of passenger vehicle retail sales in July, just 1.09 percentage points behind petrol-powered models, which held a 41.68 per cent share. A year ago, the difference between the two categories stood at more than 13 percentage points, underscoring the rapid pace of India's transition towards cleaner mobility.

Inventory remains a concern

Despite strong retail demand, FADA expressed concern over rising inventory levels in the passenger vehicle segment. Dealer inventory stood at 33-35 days at the end of July, significantly above the association's recommended level of 21 days. The association urged automobile manufacturers to better align wholesale dispatches with actual retail demand, particularly as dealerships begin stocking vehicles ahead of the festive season.

Dealers optimistic about festive demand

Looking ahead, dealer sentiment remained positive. According to FADA's survey, 74.3 per cent of dealers expect retail sales to grow in August, while 87.85 per cent anticipate stronger demand during the August-October festive season. The optimism is supported by expectations of healthy festival spending, improving rural incomes, favourable monsoon conditions and a supportive base effect from last year.
