Jio Platforms IPO subscribed 22.19 times, draws record 1.39 crore applications

Investor demand across public issue and anchor placement crosses Rs 7.4 lakh crore, with institutional buyers leading subscriptions

Jio Platforms' initial public offering (IPO) closed on Friday with an overall subscription of 22.19 times and nearly 1.39 crore applications, as combined investor demand across the public issue and anchor placement exceeded Rs 7.4 lakh crore, marking an unprecedented response to the Reliance Industries-backed digital services company.

The public offering alone attracted bids worth more than Rs 4.9 lakh crore, excluding the anchor book, while retail investor demand exceeded Rs 25,867 crore, according to stock exchange data.

The combined demand represents the value of shares investors sought to purchase, rather than the amount the company will actually raise through the offering.

The application count of nearly 1.39 crore surpassed the previous reported Indian IPO record of 97.34 lakh applications set by solar equipment manufacturer Waaree Energies in October 2024.

By 7 pm on Friday, investors had bid for 438.3 crore shares against 19.75 crore shares available for subscription, translating into an overall subscription of 22.19 times, according to the exchange's cumulative demand schedule.

Qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) emerged as the strongest investor category, bidding for 345.8 crore shares against 4.9 crore shares reserved for them, resulting in a subscription of 70.55 times.

Non-institutional investors subscribed 14 times their allocation, while retail individual investors bid for 2.72 times the shares reserved for them.

Within the QIB category, domestic financial institutions, including banks, financial institutions and insurance companies, bid for 152.5 crore shares.

Foreign institutional investors submitted bids for 123.9 crore shares, while mutual funds bid for 35.7 crore shares.

The shareholder reservation category was subscribed 7.60 times, while the employee portion received bids amounting to 2.93 times the shares available.

The figures indicated strong participation across institutional, non-institutional and retail investor categories.

Ahead of the public offering, Jio Platforms raised approximately Rs 8,110 crore from 212 anchor investors on October 19, allotting shares at Rs 1,119 apiece, the upper end of its price band.

The anchor book reportedly attracted bids exceeding Rs 2.5 lakh crore, more than 30 times the amount allocated.

Prominent investors included global asset managers and sovereign wealth funds such as BlackRock, Fidelity Investments, GIC and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

The strong response from anchor investors preceded the public issue, which opened for subscription on Wednesday and closed on Friday.

Jio Platforms' IPO comprises an entirely fresh issue of 27 crore shares, priced between Rs 1,065 and Rs 1,119 apiece. At the upper end of the price band, the company is expected to raise approximately Rs 30,213 crore, valuing the business at around USD 108 billion.

Neither parent Reliance Industries nor other existing shareholders are selling shares through the offering.

The company plans to utilise up to Rs 27,500 crore from the proceeds to repay borrowings at its wholly owned subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm.

The remaining funds will support capital expenditure, investments in technology and digital services, and working capital requirements.

Reliance Industries holds a 66.4 per cent stake in Jio Platforms, which has established itself as one of India's largest digital and telecommunications businesses.

Jio Platforms' IPO was fully subscribed within 100 minutes of opening on Wednesday, making it the fastest-subscribed mega public issue in India.

The early response surpassed the pace recorded by several other major Indian offerings.

Bajaj Housing Finance's IPO was fully subscribed by 2 pm on its opening day, while LG Electronics India's public issue achieved full subscription by the end of the first day in 2025.

Hyundai Motor India's Rs 27,870-crore IPO, previously the country's largest public offering, had received bids for just 18 per cent of the shares on offer by the end of its opening day in 2024.

Unlike Hyundai Motor India and LG Electronics India, whose IPOs consisted entirely of offers for sale by existing shareholders, Jio Platforms is issuing new shares, ensuring that the proceeds will flow directly to the company.

The offering is set to surpass Hyundai Motor India's previous fundraising record.

Jio Platforms Managing Director Akash Ambani has outlined the company's plans to expand beyond telecommunications into artificial intelligence, cloud computing and other digital services.

The company has cited its customer base of 533.3 million as a foundation for expanding into technology infrastructure and enterprise services.

Its strategy focuses on converting the scale of its telecommunications operations into higher-margin digital and technology revenue streams.

The IPO's strong subscription figures reflect investor interest in both Jio's established telecom business and its plans to diversify into emerging technology sectors.

With subscriptions exceeding the shares available across all investor categories, the offering has emerged as a landmark public-market test for the digital services business of Reliance Industries, controlled by billionaire Mukesh Ambani.
