India’s rooftop solar capacity has the potential to reach 132 GW by 2030, according to the Indian Solar Manufacturers Association (ISMA), highlighting the scale of opportunity in distributed renewable energy as the country pushes towards its clean-energy targets. The industry body expects stronger adoption across residential, commercial and industrial segments, supported by government incentives, improving economics and growing awareness among consumers. Rooftop solar is increasingly emerging as an important component of India’s energy transition because electricity can be generated close to the point of consumption while reducing pressure on conventional power networks.
Huge growth potential
ISMA’s projection underlines the considerable gap between India’s existing rooftop solar installations and the capacity that could potentially be developed by the end of the decade. Residential rooftops represent a major untapped opportunity, while commercial and industrial consumers have increasingly turned to solar power to lower electricity costs and meet sustainability commitments. Greater deployment could also help diversify India’s renewable-energy capacity beyond large utility-scale solar parks and encourage more decentralised generation.
Policy support grows
Government initiatives, particularly the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, have provided fresh momentum to the residential rooftop market by offering financial assistance to households installing solar systems. Easier financing, simplified procedures and greater involvement of distribution companies are expected to be crucial for scaling installations. The expansion of domestic solar manufacturing could further support the sector by improving equipment availability and strengthening local supply chains.
Consumers drive shift
Rooftop solar offers consumers the opportunity to generate part of their electricity requirements themselves and potentially reduce monthly power bills. For businesses, the attraction is also linked to greater certainty over long-term energy costs and efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Improvements in solar module efficiency and installation practices are making rooftop systems increasingly viable across different categories of buildings.
Manufacturing opportunity
Rapid rooftop expansion could create significant demand for domestically manufactured solar modules, cells, inverters and other components, providing another growth avenue for India’s renewable-energy manufacturing industry. It could also generate employment across installation, maintenance, financing and associated services, extending the economic impact of the solar transition beyond large manufacturing facilities.
Reaching the projected 132 GW, however, would require sustained expansion in installations, easier access to finance and stronger implementation across states. Rooftop solar could become a major pillar of India’s renewable-energy landscape by 2030 if these challenges are addressed while household and business participation continues to grow.
